An honest notice before anything else
We haven’t been able to verify New Jersey’s current child passenger safety law against an official state source. The official pages we found quote older, superseded law text, so we won’t guess at the current requirements. For the authoritative, up-to-date rules, please check the official New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission website or the current New Jersey statutes directly. This page will be updated once we’ve verified the law from an official source.
What happened with our research
We researched the car seat law of every US state using official .gov sources only — state motor vehicle agencies, legislatures, and highway safety offices. For New Jersey, five separate searches (including site-scoped searches of nj.gov and the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission) turned up no current official page summarizing the state’s child passenger safety law as amended by P.L. 2015, c.50.
The only official page we found — a 2013 NJ Office of the Attorney General press release — still quotes the pre-2015 law text, which contradicts the amended law. Every page describing the current requirements that we could find comes from unofficial sources (news sites and driver-manual mirrors), and our policy is to never publish legal details we can’t verify against an official source.
We’d rather show you this notice than a plausible-looking answer that might be wrong — especially when the fine for getting it wrong falls on you as the driver.
Where to check the official New Jersey rules
- The official New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission website (nj.gov) — look for its child passenger safety section
- The current New Jersey statutes covering child passenger restraints, as amended by P.L. 2015, c.50
This page will be updated the moment we’ve verified the current law from an official source.
New Jersey car seat law FAQ
Why doesn’t this page list New Jersey’s car seat requirements?
Because we could not verify them against a current official state source. The one official page we found quotes superseded pre-2015 law, and we don’t publish legal requirements from unofficial sources.
When will this page be updated?
As soon as we can verify New Jersey’s current child passenger safety law against an official .gov source — the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission, the legislature, or a state highway safety office.
